East Cork AC athlete Michael Harty was the runaway winner of the 2023 Cork City 10 Mile, with a course record equalling run of 49.39 which was rewarded with a €500 course record bonus by Peugeot Ireland. Harty was alone from 200m in, and led from gun to tape on a beautiful morning in Cork. .
A large group congregated behind Harty and were racing for second place, and in the end it was Killian Mooney from Dundrum South Dublin AC that took second in 53.27. John Durcan of Togher AC was third, a further 13s back.
Pre race favourite Aoife Cooke was initially in the large aforementioned group, but as the race developed, Cooke was forced to retire around the 3 mile mark. In her absence, the female race was wide open, and in the end, it was Dee Grady from Ennis Track Club that was first home, in a time of 1:00:41, almost 3 minutes clear of Leevales Lisa Hegarty in second with Catherine Murphy of Eagle AC in third.
There were over 1200 registered, and with 937 finishers, the 2023 Peugeot Race Series finished on a real high. One suspects if host club St Finbarrs AC outsourced the marshalling and freed up their members to run the race, the entry number would probably double such was the presence of marshals along the route!
